I've really come to despise Illumination Entertainment.

All their films feel so calculated and mass-market tested to be as appealing and inoffensive as possible, while putting next to no money into R&D or artistic development. And they're consistently rewarded for that mediocrity/stinginess by making metric fucktons of cash.

I'm worried that other animation studios are going to start taking their cue from IE's success and make their films as bland and cheap as possible. It's already hard enough to make it as an animator or artist in the film industry, we don't need further excuses to slash salaries or artistic development in the name of cost-cutting/profit.

(and that's not even touching how fucking obnoxious their marketing is)

Cheers, fellow secret maker! I made a secret with this text too, for next week. I've asked case to go ahead and discard it, but in case it pops up anyway I just wanted to give you a heads up.

I agree. But it's the way that all entertainment companies are going to go, not just animation. It's a broad trend across all sectors.

They know what kids want. But I doubt other studios will because too many of one thing will make people less interested in seeing it.

I just really hate the minions so I kind of irrationally squint my eyes whenever I see the studio name.

Granted I'm not sure if I've enjoyed any of their other movies, there must be one I just can't think of any.

Been saying the same about Pixar for years (minus the marketing, I don't think anyone markets as frustratingly as Illumination). I'm as tired of Minions as everyone else but they're hardly the only company who goes for profit over innovation. It's kind of heartbreaking with Illumination in particular because they clearly didn't start out that way, the first (and arguably best) Despicable Me movie was basically not marketed AT ALL outside of a few Minion plush you could only find as claw machine prizes and some branding on Airheads candy. And then they did a 180 and FLOODED the market when DM2 and the Minions movie came out. And it's clearly worked out for them, so they have no reason to go back.

Pixar's been pushing the animation, but they're not flashy or obvious outside of the shorts.

I love the first Despicable Me movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Pixar does the same shit. They're just better at making people think they're deep.

I'm so.......ugh, why, at the fact they're making a Super Mario Bros. movie.

The sad thing is, it can be nothing BUT better than the one 20 years ago.

The mere existence of their Grinch movie bugs me. I wish that for once, just once, a mean, Christmas-hating character would stay mean or at least would not convert to the Christmas-loving cult.

I'm mad because the original animation is perfect. Why on earth would you remake that? I get the live action one, even if it is terrible. WHy another animation?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not mad, but I won't bother seeing it for the reasons you cited. What's the point?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
So you don't understand how Christmas works. Got it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm supposed to let a bunch of strangers brainwash me into being happy 24/7 for two whole freaking months to celebrate the fact that we're going to sacrifice a newborn to the wrat of an ancient god, gotcha.
This is exactly why I outright hate Christmas: because I'm not allowed to merely dislike it or even feel neutral towards it, no, I'm required to love it. Fuck you all, I'm not.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"we're going to sacrifice a newborn to the wrat of an ancient god,"

WHAT? I don't like Christmas either but do try to get your facts straight. NT clear that Jesus made the choice to die.

You're why I hate fellow atheists. This entire attitude.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
The recent Grinch movie is my favorite out of the three.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's always going to be bottom-feeders in every industry, and they're hardly the worst to claim this niche.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can say is that I really enjoyed Sing.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-01 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And Disney and Dreamworks aren't like that at all?
