If they didn't, I'm sure they were at still very aware that parts of the fandom would.

I actually think its because they were aware fandom was shipping pinecest that they wrote their back story the way it was. Stanley and Stanford grew up super close but before they graduated high school Stanley got kicked out. I feel like the writers purposely did it this way to avoid people shipping them as they appear younger. Them being old men really discourages shipping, I find.

Tbh... I hope so! I love Stancest. <3 And there definitely were... moments where I felt that they were definitely being teased, ship-wise. The "Heh, me and my nerdy bro" bit from the finale gave me "announcing engagement vibes", personally.
