I haven't seen the movie, but... isn't it basically fanfiction based on the many (now disproven) theories that some of the Romanovs escaped? From their POV, they aren't making a movie about a murdered girl, they're making a movie about one who escaped a horrible fate.

To be fair, it was only conclusively proven in 2007.

Though it is likely that her remains were among the ones found in 1991, until the rest of the remains were found in 2007, only three of the four grand duchesses' remains had been found when the film came out.

I'm the opposite. I loved that in Australian Tv series Mirror Mirror one of the kids lived.
I guess for me enough time has passed. I'm more sensitive about WWII because I know people who took part in it. It's the same logic as with the pirates and vikings who where very unpleasant people to meet in the days long gone.

God Mirror, Mirror is a blast from the past. I think in the UK we only got it on a Sky channel so I often questioned if I was making it up because barely anyone remembers it. I was obsessed with that show for a brief time in the mid 90s!

Oh hey, I was thinking about that show just the other day!

Well, the story is kind of based on Anna Anderson, only she was right about being Anastasia, and not a con artist/delusional victim like the real Anna.

Anon, hate to tell you this since you apparently don't know, but Anna Anderson was not Anastasia. DNA proved it years ago.

Yes? Anon wasn't saying she was. She's saying the movie was based on the idea of her actually being Anastasia.

Anon, hate to tell you this since you apparently don't know, but your reading comprehension sucks.

...and not a con artist/delusional victim like the real Anna.

^^^ You missed this part of ayrt's comment. If you're dead set on correcting people, you really need to read more carefully.

My fascination with the Romanovs started with this movie (and that ripoff Secret of Anastasia one). I also think a live action remake would be cool, but I’d feel a little weird about it since we now know for sure all the grand duchesses were murdered.

IIRC, this was to a large degree an animated re-make of some fifties film.

I don't want a live action version simply because ye gods, do I detest this recent trend of live action remakes of 2D animated works.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right. I saw the live action 50s movie a long time ago as a child and don't remember most of it, but I do remember it existing.

That said, and I might one day make this a secret of my own, I would love to see a live action film adaptation of the Broadway musical. But then, I feel that way about a lot of movies-turned-musicals; that they should be made into movie musical remakes. (Another likely future secret.)

I think it was supposed to be based on the legend that Anastasia escaped (and it wasn't 100% proven at the time that she hadn't) and not just "Hey, let's make a movie about this murdered kid but say she wasn't murdered."

(Anonymous) 2018-12-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Considering the movie was made a decade before Anastasia's death was conclusively proven, it's less "they made this movie about a murdered 17-year-old girl" and more "they made this movie about the legend surrounding this girl who yes, probably died, but possibly escaped".

Well, there is a stage musical version of the movie, so maybe you'll get lucky and it'll be adapted back to movie form?
