Maybe it's just the circles I run in, but I see a lot more love for her than hate. The hate seems to be directed at Voyager in general rather than her.

Yeah. It's not her fault she's on the worst Trek show.

Oh come on, it's better than Enterprise.

What kind of hate does Janeway get? I've never seen any myself but I'm not in the fandom. I always loved her.

You have to admit that she was pretty inconsistently written in some episodes.

I think Kate Mulgrew is a good actor and she did what she could with what they gave her. But some of the decisions and actions written for Janeway were irrational or needlessly dangerous and seemed directly contradictory to her established character traits and motivations. I generally liked her, but there were a few times where if they had written an epilogue to certain episodes to show that she'd somehow been possessed by Q or a Hirogen during the episode, it would have made more sense.

Yeah, Janeway is my favorite captain, but I feel like there's two different contradictory versions of the character and the writers never got around to picking one and sticking with it or reconciling them in any way. Which is a criticism that can be applied to most of the characters on the show, and to the overarching story itself.

I love her best simply because she's the only girl captain.

I've come around to understanding why the show itself is so relatively unpopular, but I'll always defend Janeway.

(And for those apparently running in different online circles, yes, I've seen criticism of her to the level of "The show is only as good as its captain and that's why Voyager's bad.")

Honestly, I don't even get why the show is unpopular. DS9 and Sisco are my favorite, but I love Voyager and Janeway too.

Voyager is my favorite Trek show and Janeway is my favorite captain.

Remember, Voyager was first on in 1995. That's before Buffy. Girl power was only in its infancy. It's very different to watch it now than to have watched it then.

Preach it, OP. I'll always be on Team Janeway. I think a lot of Voyager criticism in general tends to be unfair, if only because many of the critics seem to be holding it to a much higher standard than other Trek shows (especially TOS and TNG). I've seen lot of Trek fans condemn Voyager entirely based solely on its first two seasons and on Threshold in particular, while at the same time either forgetting or ignoring the fact that, for example, TNG not only did the whole "devolve into lizards for ridiculous reasons" first, their first two seasons kind of sucked, too. In general, I've found that a lot of Voyager's worst critics tend to act as though all of the other Trek series are flawless works of art with absolutely no shaky beginnings, bad episodes, inconsistent writing and characterization, goofy moments or annoying characters. Was Voyager flawed? Gods, yes, but that's not all it was, and I'd argue that it's no more-so than any other Trek series. And though I hate to cry "sexism" needlessly, I can't help but think that if Janeway had been a man, the series would not be anywhere near as hated as it is.

She’s right in the middle for me, but I agree that most of the Janeway criticism is over the top. I think Voyager broke the Star Trek formula too much for a lot of people. There were a lot of Gilligan’s Island jokes being made at the time. Add in Trek’s notorious early season scripting and viewers just didn’t stick around. Honestly, my biggest issue with the show was that I didn’t think the crew related to each other very well overall. That wasn’t on Janeway though.
