well, i've got to say this is the first time i've seen the argument put this way (cyclists are usually all "we have to ride on pavements otherwise we get run over because every car and lorry in the world is out to get us")

but i still can't pretend to agree with it; if anything, a spread-out half-rural town is the ideal place for cyclists to be in the streets because the streets won't be as cluttered (and i say this as somebody who grew up cycling in a rural area)
