OP

I get that it is realistic development. But there was a very specific dynamic in the original where he was underestimated and ignored because of his size as much as anything else. And I feel like they tried to keep some of that dynamic in the second one (not fully, but some of it), but it didn't work for me without that size difference. There was no reason for people to keep underestimating him given what he'd shown in the first movie and given his looks in the second. I didn't really buy it.

Except the only person underestimating him in the second movie is the villain. Who is huge and murderous, and therefore has no respect for Hiccup's ideals, youth, or his much smaller dragon.

Both his parents underestimate him and refuse to listen to him.

AYRT - fair enough, but I think the important part of your comment here has to do with the underestimation of him not making sense and absolutely nothing about your original secret hints at that, IMO. You're switching from "why wasn't the 20-year-old still as nerdy as he was at 15 [or whatever the ages were] and why isn't he still shorter than his love interest?" to "his relationship dynamics don't reflect his physical and personal growth". If you wanted to talk about/critique the latter point, why didn't you make that your secret?
