Believe me, if the majority of people didn't find it a dick move to ride on the sidewalk, I would happily ride on the sidewalk as much as possible. Because it's definitely safer for me. But most people DO consider it a dick move (which I can understand), so whenever I've ridden a bike in the past I've made an effort to sick to the roads as much as I could.

Really, most of this is on drivers, not bike riders or pedestrians. It's on drivers to drive in a way that doesn't endanger bicyclists, and it's on society and government (especially in America) to design our laws, streets, infrastructure, etc in a way that works for bikes and pedestrians instead of just cars.

And that also includes sensible mass transit, while we're at it.
