What is the age difference there anyway?

Since the Ocampans only live for like nine years and The Doctor was based on an actual person in his 40s, but for all intents and purposes he's doesn't start developing a self-awareness until a bit after he's first activated.

That's what I was thinking. When you're looking at an alien with an accelerated lifespan and an AI that wasn't even supposed to be sentient but managed to gain awareness over the early parts of the show, the "age gap" becomes purely cosmetic. Arguably Kes is the older one here, since she's had at least a couple years to gain life experience and develop emotionally. And so she passes some of that on to him. It works out to be a very balanced kind of relationship.

I don't even ship it myself, but it makes perfect sense why it might appeal to OP.

And then when they did the wibbly wobbly general relativity planet, The EMH aged over a century in the course of a few minutes of screen time.
