I agree; I'm not that thrilled to see how the fandom has navigated purity culture. Jareth/Sarah was a ship for me before I even knew what shipping was. I saw Labyrinth when I was 11 and was intrigued and excited by how empowered Sarah became over her supposed archnemesis. I think people focus on the age difference and forget how interesting the reverse-power dynamics were in this movie.

Agreed. I didn't even know what fandom and shipping was when I was a kid, but the movie really stuck with me, particularly the ending and how fascinating the relationship dynamic was as it evolved over the course of the film. The fic for this fandom usually carries on with that theme and the best fics usually address Sarah's emotional maturity and how she deals with Jareth as an adult.

Any fic recs? I love this movie/relationship but for some reason have never bothered to go fic hunting.

I've been out of the fandom for so long, I don't know what's current, sorry! Most of the fics were on FFnet. KLMorgan's "What Dreams May Come" is probably the best known.

Aww, okay, I may have to go diving! Wish me luck, lol.

Good luck! It's been around for quite some time so there should be plenty to dig through. Some names to check out:

scatteredlogic
knifeedge
Lixxle (if you like humor)

And there's a cute comic, too:

I looove the Girls Next Door comic, not least because of the close examination of the Jareth/Sarah relationship and all its ups and downs.

What Dreams May Come is the unfinished sequel to A Forfeit of Dreams. I loved AFoD, but I recommend skipping its epilogue as well as WDMC.

sa

Whoops, so the AO3 version doesn't have the epilogue. I didn't need to write all those caveats because it's already perfect.

Me too. I was wild for Jareth and Sarah before I even knew what shipping was. Oh god that speech about being her slave as long as she does what he says started up a secret kink in me.

So, crazily, I just watched this two days ago with my son for the first time in years for me (but his very first time - he loved it, happy to report!). ODDLY, I found myself really interested in seeing Jareth/future!older!Toby. This would probably INCITE the antis on Tumblr. XD

But yeah, how can one not completely ship Jareth/Sarah after all their chemistry? It's hard to argue this is pedo to begin with because Jareth really isn't human, not in the same sense that Sarah and Toby is. It's a really grey area imo.

This is Toby now:

Isn't the manga sequel about Jareth and older Toby?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Jareth/Sarah was probably my first ship. I was like 8 when I first saw Labyrinth & even then I loved their dynamic.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Like a lot of people who watched this as a young person - it was likely my first ship...before I really shipped anything. TBH, I still love the pairing; still 'ship' the characters and still read fanfiction. I think the fandom (for the most part) has always been quite aware of the potentially squicky elements, and (for the most part) dealt with them fairly maturely.
Its one of those classic ships for me that I will likely always love <3
