I'm not sure I'd send it to the author if you're really done a lot of rewrites on it. That's kind of a dicky move, really, for the same reason paperclipchains mentioned. About the only time I wouldn't be weirded out if someone did that to me, is if it were a friend of mine and we'd chatted about it and they'd asked first. I might be OK with it, too, if it were a story I'd abandoned and somebody wanted to use the same characters/concepts, basically redo it their way, and they credited me... so long as they asked first. That's the big thing.

Basically, if you REALLY want to do it, I strongly suggest asking the authors straight out ahead of time if they "mind" you "editing" the text of the story a little, because you "like to edit things" and "want to help them improve their writing" by "suggesting some possible rewrites". If they say sure, then go ahead - wait a few days and then send it, see how they react. If they say no, don't send it. Let it sit on your hard drive.

That's about the only way you could do it in the vast majority of cases without being a douchebag. Rewriting it for your own amusement or practice or whatever? That's one thing; that's a hobby. Emailing it to the authors just to harass them and get "entertainment" out of their rightfully disconcerted or upset reactions, or changing the name and posting it under your own account as if you'd written it completely (as 130 pretty much admits to outright) though, that's just being an asshole.

The one time that I actually contacted the author, I basically just offered my services as a beta, and I helped her re-write all the chapters (until she dropped off the internet @_@ I have no clue where she went). I don't think I have the heart to taunt people, or to be mean about any of it, and I doubt I'll get the courage to actually send them back D:
