Agreed.

I don't know why people on here have issues with her writing. Maybe her style doesn't appeal to you, which is fine, but it's clear she has plenty of writing talent.

Personally, I think she's an okay writer. The problem is, her style is suited to writing children's literature more. When she tried to make the later books more mature as Harry aged, it never really followed through. the situations were more adult, but the writing was still for a children's book.

In the middle of a reread. There are a lot of poorly edited sentences in OOTP, and her lexicon is rather small. She uses the same expressions with no regard to the existence of a thesaurus. Everything is either “angrily,”or someone “sniggered.” It is very awkward to read.

Synonyms are your friend.

Are those the things that constitute good writing?

late to the party, writers actually have a system of word usage and language that helps determine what age level they naturally write for. There are programs that writers can run their manuscripts through and it will go "This is YA" or "This is MG" depending on vocabulary and sentence structure.

The less variation of words you use, generally the lower your age bracket. (The Cat in the Hat being a prime children's example with 50 words.)

Each writer's style tends to fall in different brackets naturally so they have to WORK to force it to a different level. And that's not counting actual story content and age of characters.
