What kind of things did they teach you, anon? New parent asking.

I'm just now seeing this and hope you will see my reply.

How to take care of a house. Not just the cleaning but maintenance and preparing it for each season.
How to cook and bake. Not just some recipes but how to actually create something from basic ingredients, what to mix and how much, etc.
How to care for my clothes and my belonging so they will last. And also the value of my belongings. I struggled to grasp that until I was fifteen and my parents bought me a CD player. They were very new and very expensive things. My CD player cost the equivalent of one month's pay for my father. One month of a two hour commute and 9 hours at the office five days a week for four weeks. All that time away from us and it didn't go towards feeding or clothing us or keeping the roof over our heads, it went to a luxury toy for me. That hit me like thunder.
Manners. When it's appropriate to say thanks and when a proper thank you is required. How to accept a compliment, when to give one and how to do it without sounding like a kiss ass or stalker. Don't just hold the door open for someone; move out of their way, too. And if someone is being rude or unkind just walk away. And how to handle it when it's someone you can't walk away from.
How to be a good friend. Ask how they are and offer help. Listen. None of these things come naturally to me but you'd never know it.
Fiscal responsibility. Started with savings and allowance as a kid but now in my 40s I turn to them for investment advice. About ten years ago they helped me narrowly avoid financial ruin because I hadn't diversified my investments when I first started doing it all on my own.
"You can be anything you want to be. You can do anything you set your mind to." They still tell me this. I'm still flying high on their moral support.
How to balance work and play. When it's appropriate to treat yourself and when it's not. How to distinguish between needs and wants.
How to drive. How to change the oil and dispose of it and how to change the tires. How to find a good mechanic. How to buy a car and when it's time to trade it in for a newer model.
Don't keep up with the Joneses. Value what you have and care for it. Most of it will last you a long time even if it isn't as fashionable as what others have. This is more about things like electronics, cars, and home appliances instead of clothing. I was actually taught it's important to keep clothing reasonably fashionable but no so trendy as to need constant replacing. Like it or not the world will judge you on how you choose to dress yourself. Choose the way you want them to judge you.
