This. TLJ is about how one person can be many conflicting things at once. Rey can be on the heroine's journey and want to save the world, but still be drawn to the Dark Side. Finn can be warm and funny and an amazing friend, but still instinctively turn tail and abandon the Resistance if things get too hot. Rose can be nervous and stuttery and mourning and in grief, but still stand up to the Stormtrooper captain and commit acts of tremendous bravery. Kylo Ren can be an emotionally crippled murderous psychopath, and still talk about vulnerable feelings with a girl while they tremblingly touch hands by a campfire. Luke can be Luke, but still be jaded and afraid. Holdo can be authoritarian and hard, but still sacrifice everything for her cause. Poe can be passionate and caring, and still be a hotheaded jerk. It's one of the reasons I love this film so much.

All Star Wars characters with force sensitivity have been drawn to the dark at one point or another. It's not new. Friendships that included betrayal and remorse are also nothing new in Star Wars (Lando Calrissian ring any bells?)
Karmic heel-face-turns? Nothing new. See Darth Vader. Reluctant hero after not wanting to be involved? Han Solo. And so on. So I don't get why any of the character developments in TLJ are supposed to be so revolutionary even though they've been there before.

I agree, it's always been a feature of Star Wars. I think it stands out more in TLJ though because some of dichotomous character traits came looong after people had already made up their minds about a specific character (Luke) or misunderstood what the character was supposed to represent (Kylo, and the people who are annoyed he failed as a "scary villain" when that was clearly never his character direction to begin with).

True. But I think it's a bit weird in TLJ because imo, they tried so hard to subvert character expectations that it didn't feel like a logical development in some cases but more a "let's subvert it for subversion's sake". While I didn't hate TLJ, I felt a lot of the plot and character development was very dependent on "what will surprise or even piss people off the most" - no matter if it served the story or not.

I think there's a significant and good thematic justification for pretty much everything they did in the movie

I might be forgetting something though, but I definitely think that's true of EG Luke and Kylo
