My grandmother used to give terrible gifts. She always gave me pink clothes (knowing I hated and never wore pink), and they were always at least a couple sizes too small. Knowing my grandmother, I firmly believe she was doing the latter on purpose.

They were lovely, but a friend gave me a an eight-pack of earrings when I've never had a single piercing in my entire life.

I think I've mentioned this here before. Someone who didn't like me drew my name in a secret Santa and got me a bunch of monogrammed stuff. With the WRONG FUCKING INITIAL.

So weird. Who gives monogrammed gifts in the 21st century? You're not a Regency heiress who requires a hope chest full of the finest monogrammed linens to furnish your country estate, LOL.

Unless you are, in which case... that's so cool.

this was in the 20th century, but she was just being a bitch.

I have a relative who means well, but she doesn't really know me at all and tends to give some pretty mediocre presents. I've told her she doesn't need to give me anything at all and that I just enjoy seeing her at the holidays, but... no dice. So I get stuff like:

* a scented candle (I hate scented candles and am allergic to perfumes) that looks like it was left in a hot car in July.

* a horribly itchy sweater that's six sizes too small, seriously what is this a sweater for ANTS

* random hardback book she just finished reading because she knows I like to read... and I do, but not badly written thrillers

* gift certificates to chain restaurants I dislike - which is tragic, because I love going out to eat, she just doesn't seem to pick anything I'd actually enjoy eating. I use or give them away (not as presents, I just give them to people who can use them) and once I got food poisoning from eating at a restaurant I normally wouldn't go to, just because I had a gift certificate

The food poisoning was the worst. :(

My aunt gave me Wuthering Heights when I was, I dunno, twelve, maybe? I think I probably read fewer pages than I was years old before chucking it across the room, and I was one of those kids that would read anything.

Also, one of my uncles—not the one married to my aunt—used to mostly get me and my mom—his sister—weird knickknack-y stuff. One time there was thos bizarre handmade bowl ... thing on stubby legs. It looked kind of like a clay cow udder, only beige and teal. A lot of the other stuff was just weird touristy dreck from wherever he’d travelled most recently. He was always the rich relative, and I’ve never figured out if he just bought random weird shit to be cheap or if he was just bad at picking presents. These days he still occasionally brings me souvenirs, but the best stuff I’ve ever gotten from him is his old tech when he buys new phones and tablets.

My cousin tends to get me some random gift box that has maybe a mug and a plaque with a bible verse or inspirational quote on them.
