I feel dumb because I don't understand this secret at all...

(Anonymous) 2018-12-08 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m in the same boat as you, anon.

My reading would be fans not treating the characters right (poorly characterizing them, writing dirty porn, etc.) or the people behind the show right (criticizing the writer(s) and creator(s), being inappropriate about the actors, etc.).

That's how I read it, too.

Just imagine your current most beloved show is Voltron, take a look at the fandom and tadaaaa.

I'm the same. I love all fandoms I'm in, but works that move me deeply are just no-go as far as fandom is concerned, because I can't stand to see the inevitable badfic and crappy fanart and OOC RP blogs. It's not that I mind that people write omegaverse fic or whatever, but there are some things that are just too holy.

I might understand this? Kind of?

Like, there are certain stories I love and respect too much exactly as they are. Stories that I find meaningful, and beautiful, and that I take really seriously. Battlestar Galactica is an example of this for me. It wasn't perfect, but it just consistently astounded me with how good it was. All I wanted was to sit there and shut up and let it effectively pummel me any which way it chose to. So I could never get into the fandom, because I'm not interested in seeing other versions and interpretations of the story and the characters.

However, for me that's only one way of loving a text. I have other texts I love to bits, yet I love them only in part for what they are canonically, and just as much for what they could be, and/or what fandom has done with them.

So I wouldn't say I can't enjoy fandoms for things I really love. But I do agree that there are some things I love in a particular way, for which I can't really enjoy their fandoms.

There are definitely a few things I love so much I can't really be in the fandom for them. But it has nothing to do with how respectful fans are. For me, fandom is a way to improve on the material, to fill in the blanks of storylines and character development, etc. If something is perfect to me just as it is, then I don't need any fanworks for it.
