AYRT—I may actually end up using Protonmail, but it’s kind of sad that I’m not worried about a repressive government getting hold of my info, or hiding a super out-there porn habit from a significant other. I’m just a combo of naturally paranoid, and annoyed by targeted ads.

Storytime: I have no kids and no young relatives, but liquid baby vitamins can be used in smaller doses for chickens, which I keep. Which means I occasionally google dosage amounts and buy baby (human) vitamins. More than once, I’ve been sent sample cases of baby (human) formula in the mail a couple weeks after buying the stuff.

Also, sometimes I buy plants from online nursery catalogs. This means that every winter and spring I get sent enough plant/seed catalogs that I’ve contemplated decoupaging my entire bathroom. I don’t mind them so much; at least they’re fun to look through.

It does make me wonder if this happens to people no matter what they google/buy. If someone googles “bearded dragons” one too many times, do they get sent sample herpetology magazines? Do women who buy black leather corsets and spiky boots for Catwoman costumes get catalogs full of fetishwear?

On the other hand, I remember someone posting about how stupid amazon’s purchase suggestion algorithm was because they’d bought one toilet seat, dammit, and did not need to subscibe to get them delivered every month.

And then there’s bs like LJ/Tumblr/lots of other sites going tits up (or not) because their owning companies wanted to sanitize them to increase their userbase/people whose info they could sell/who could be sold to.

aside from the tumblr thing, none of these things have ever happened to me (yet) and i've been making purchases over the internet for a long time.

I like to browse Duluth Trading Company's site sometimes, so I get a lot of ads for them on other websites and it's always for their men's underwear, even though I was looking at women's clothes. The adds are cheeky so it's kind of funny but it probably looks weird to anyone looking over my shoulder that there's this banner add for underpants that's all "SWAGGER WITHOUT THE SWING IN BULLPEN UNDERWEAR!"
