one of the great joys of fanfic is being able to find what I want. I don't want to have a ~hunger for discovering what happens~ only for the answer to be 'lol your fav died, surprise!!! aren't you surprised???? I'm such a great artist!'

like, no, I don't want to waste my time with that

also I super hate this "obviously common/dangerous triggers like eating disorders are on the same level as ~totally unpredictable~ triggers" as if 1) eating disorders are somehow crucial to the mysterious tension of your plot, sure, and 2) as if people with more unusual triggers don't know that they're unusual, and that they should take more proactive measures.

honestly you sound kind of pretentious and really proud of being a prick

great, great post

Yeah, I don't want a wall of tags warning be about every little thing, but I DO want to know if my ship ends up together in the end or my favorite character dies (I'm forever traumatized by a fic in which part of my ship was executed for being a witch and the other person was just sitting in front of their grave in the epilogue. Like what the fuck?).

Books and original stories can do all that stuff, but I read fanfic for FUN.

da

One of the most beautiful fanfics I've ever read ends with one half of my OTP dead and the other forced to live from her late teens on without the person she knows to be her soulmate.

I never want to read a fanfic like that again.

DA

I can 1000% relate to this. I've been absolutely wrecked by some fics out there.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of a tragedy person... Don't suppose you have a link or title?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
And this is why I always read the last few paragraphs of a long fic before I get invested in it.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
We have different definitions of the word FUN in regards to literature.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
So, so much love for this comment. I could not agree more.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
... and you sound like the typical hypocritically intolerant tumblrista who reads nothing but fanfic.

But hey, as long as you're having fun, bae!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but I have no idea where you got that from

given that their whole comment is about drawing a very reasonable distinction between fanfic and other kinds of fiction

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, you're sounding pretty triggered yourself there, buddy.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, MTE.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So when you see a "Choose Not to Warn", then continue scrolling on your merry way until you find something that you DO want. OP is happy; you're happy. Win win.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I actually don't read fanfic much anymore anyway. I just dislike people thinking their ~artistic genius~ is somehow morally superior to putting in effort not to be a dick.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? Because I feel like I've said this exact thing before - just less well.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
If they warn that they don't warn, they're putting in the effort, so...

(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between no warning at all, and choosing the 'chose not to warn' though. Either way, no one's obligated to warn for anything in the same way that no one's obligated to read something with no warnings in case it might bother them. It's a two way street.

I don't put a lot of tags warning because I'm lazy as fuck. It's usually the pairing, the rating, and anything I might want to avoid (ie character death, graphic violence, etc.), and it's cool if people don't read my stuff on the off chance it might contain something they don't like.

It's not just direct mention of eating disorders that can be a trigger for people with eating disorders, though. It can be as basic as mentions of eating or food, or even a specific food. Warning for say, a character who suffers from ED is very different than warning for mentions of food or eating.

thank you! I hate people like op who act like others asking you to appropriately tag your fic is somehow an affront to their ~creative genius~. Because you know, your tantrum about people daring to ask you to let people know how to avoid triggers (which is a real psychology term but hey y'all keep devaluing mental illness if it's what you need to feel big and bad) is somehow so much better and more valid than people asking you to tag for content that could potentially cause them psychological distress at the very best.

And don't even get me started on "real life doesn't have warnings," it doesn't make you cooler to be a dick who enjoys deliberately exposing people to triggers just because you feel uncomfortable when we are not about me.
