I mean, even if I didn't have personal experience with that kind of squicky age-gap relationship, isn't it still weird?

If they had played it more towards an older sister/little brother relationship I would have had no problems, but 12 and 15 (14? whatever) is still weird. One is middle school and one is high school aged. And if the sexes had been reversed I feel like more people would find it weird.

nayrt

I always thought they did play it in a little brother/older sister sort of way- but at the same time Katara was a very controlling person. She seemed to try and take that role up on everybody that she met, it's just that Aang was just about the only one who followed suit... Their relationship doesn't bug me more than the fact that they are so young, but it isn't as if the original series conveys much more than a simple crush between the two of them. So it's not like there's anything substantial/explicit to freak out about;;

I don't have middle school where I live, just pre, grade, (1-8) and high (9-12) school. I remember how much a year or two squicked me out back in grade eight, so I get where you're coming from. It's just that it isn't as if the South Pole, with all their fifteen people, have schooling or anything that distinguishes one age group from another. They aren't so far apart in age in the first place, (like two years is like nothing in the long run) but it isn't as if they introduce themselves by their age alone. I don't think their specific ages are ever brought up in the show, so it isn't as if Katara is preying on Aang, regardless of her gender. It's just that they eventually end up together, and by that time, two years born apart is more than just normal.
