(Anonymous) 2018-12-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)Goodness knows superhero comics are already selling less than they ever have before (not including fans of the movies trying to get into the comics). Trying to bring that same formula into the movies will result in the same.

kinda ranting here
(Anonymous) 2018-12-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)I meant the way that comic plots hardly ever conclusively wrap up a story. There's always the bigger picture at hand, each individual movie is just ancillary to a bigger villain. Big villain gets defeated, even bigger villain pops up immediately and cackles, repeat ad nauseum until power creep reaches fatiguing levels.
Marvel movies are setting up for a long term presence, and establishing characterization across multiple movies and introducing so many minor (less recognizable names than the hulk, thor, iron man, etc.) heroes that their presence and emotional depth is not really noticeable. But don't worry, Marvel says, they'll get more depth in the next movie. But why not just put that well-needed characterization in this movie? Please just make better, smaller, self-contained movies.
I speak as someone who's not a fan of comics, and how they just go on forever and forever. The characterization in the marvel movies doesn't work for me, so that's why I feel that it's very threadbare and relies on having multiple movies to work instead of what a single film does. I think that perhaps a serialized but movies could be interesting, but Marvel's individual movies suffer because they're so sure they're going to get more movies that will add on to it later by context.
