Nah, it's Shiro who's the dullest and gets the least character development. Keith has a past we actually know about and goes from an angry loner to a good leader. He's also funny and the prettiest male character by a huge margin, and Steven Yeun's voice is to die for.

They're both the best boy. It's not a competition. The only competition between Keith and Shiro is over who loves the other more. Keith so far is leading in the Grand Dramatic Gestures Category, and Shiro is leading in Verbal Validation.

I don't ship Sheith, but I do appreciate that everything about them subverts the usual mentor/mentee relationship, considering it's Shiro who's kind of the damsel in distress who needs positive reinforcement from Keith at times, rather than just constantly being Shiro boosting Keith up. There's a nice refreshing equality there. Oh, and it's nice that the mentor didn't die too, I'm pretty tired of that cliche.

And I will always feel good about the fact that Keith will always prioritize Shiro over Lance no matter how hard Klance shippers try to minimize the love they have for each other. Fuck this prioritization of romantic love over familial love narrative they keep enforcing.

'shut up and trust me' season one to 'shut up and trust me' season seven isn't a good leader (and two years leading absolutely no one on a space whale isn't 'development', that's mommy time). If Keith didn't have plot armor no one would be following him by this point as seen when the show almost addressed the issue by dumping them all floating in space but then coped out before resolving any of the problems that were brought up in favor of a space whale fight instead. Keith could have been a good leader. Instead he got put on a bus for three seasons with no development and then came back just in time to have everything dropped into his lap without any story lead up that let him earn it. Season one through three Keith was interesting and developing as a character. Seven seven Keith is a magical anime girl who's been Mary Sued by the writers (rebel loner who's somehow still amazing at everything like fighting and flying? ambidextrous sword fighting (they teach that in junior high apparently)? not one but two magic swords? half alien but only in a 'pretty' and completely non-hindering kind of way? a bond with the black lion strong enough to fly it from outside when he's never even talked to it? yet another Garrison era rival? teleporting space wolf? just name him Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way already and get it over with). Don't get me wrong, I used to like Keith and what I thought the story was setting up for him which is why I'm so upset by the complete lack of actual development in the story itself and the magic 'point A to point Z without anything in between to make me feel like he grew or earned it'. I wanted to watch him work on building bonds with his entire team on a personal level and learning to open up to them and trusting them and earning their trust and stepping forward into leadership that felt natural and like an earned position of growth. Instead we got that.

Even a kids show should have been able to manage something as basic as 'friendship is important' and 'you have to work for what's important to you'.

You know all those things were also true in seasons one to three where you claim he was interesting, right?

LMAO, wrong. He's had one Garrison-era rival. One. James was his only rival. Keith's Garrison rivalry with Lance existed entirely Lance's head, or have you forgotten? Literally the first thing Keith says to Lance is, "Who are you?" Dude was barely aware of Lance's existence before the show started.

I'm not fond of how Keith was put on a bus and how so much of his development took place offscreen either. But I do think you're missing the point of mommy time. He wasn't developing his leadership skills during that time (obviously, as you pointed out, there was no one there to lead). What he was getting was a chance to spend time with a parent who loved him. It was the beginning of healing from wounds dealt to him early in life. His anger, his recklessness and disregard for his own life, his difficulty in connecting and communicating with people, and yes, even his reluctance to lead --- all of that stemmed from his low self-worth. And while Krolia abandoning him wasn't the only factor contributing to that, it was the first and likely the most formative.

But finding out that Krolia loved him after all, learning that there was a person in the universe who loved him more than anything --- that was the first step toward Keith becoming a stronger and surer person. It sucks that most of their time together took place in a series of montages. I really would have loved to see their time together in greater detail. But the show got the gist of it across well enough, IMO. When Keith came back to Voltron, it was as a man who knows his own value. It's why Shiro viciously calling him broken and worthless in The Black Paladins didn't cause him to so much as flinch. It's why he was able to step up to lead without fear and hesitation as he did the first time around.

'shut up and trust me' season seven

I don't know where you're getting this, btw. Keith in seasons 6 and 7 trusted in and made good use of the skills of every single one of his teammates. He trusted Lance to lead in his absence. He listened to the others' plans and suggestions and went along with them. He encouraged and supported Hunk through a difficult time, even though being emotionally open wasn't something that came to him naturally.
