Eh, he was awkward around his fellow youths, but he also did have friends his own age and he seemed comfortable around them at the end of the episode. Do I think he could have been better socialized as a kid? Sure. But I don't think he was irreparably broken, and I also don't think his weirdness was 100% the fault of his upbringing, because he seemed genuinely happy doing his thing before the Queer Eye intervention.

But, also, his godmother was the one who wanted him on the show in the first place? She recognized that he needed to get out of her bubble and be more independent, and supported that pretty wholly. I might be cutting her too much slack, because what she did couldn't have been easy and, awkwardness aside, he seemed like a decent kid.

tbh he was better socialized than I was, and I went to a nice public school. I was just a giant ass introvert who never connected with anyone despite my parents making me do all kinds of teams and clubs. not to mention, like....it's not child neglect to live in a small town, you know? Plus, her choosing to homeschool him and making the wacky jackets and everything did genuinely seem to be her going a little overboard with genuinely being supportive. He never had a moment where he was like "music is really her dream for me, not my thing." he wants to pursue musicianship right now! it's not her fault that she's not hip, or that his grade school Peanut King friends moved away!

I think some parts of the episode were super cringey, but "made me feel bad" does not equal "morally wrong".

He had some friends he used to be in a band with that he hadn't talked to much for a while. At one point, he says he's never spent the night away from home. Let that sink in - he's old enough to go to college and he's never spent a single night away from his godmother.

It's not that I think his godmother had no self-awareness at all. She does. She even says at one point that she knows she has to let go. But let's not forget she's also the one who pulled him out of public school and somehow never made the effort to make sure he had friends his own age or played outside but she's buying him a gigantic apartment and he's going to live on his own... 20 minutes from where she lives.
