found out my wife and I are going to have to pay $300 a month we don't have for an old debt that was never settled and they won't give us any relief on it. we're going to have to survive two weeks on $60 now and we don't have food in the fridge. we're fucked.

How old is the debt/when was your last payment? If you're in the US, google debt statute of limitations. If it's past that point, they can't touch you for it and if they try to sue you, it'll get thrown out, but ONLY if you haven't "reactivated" the debt by making a payment. I'm sure similar things probably exist in other countries, as well.

If you live near any food banks or church food pantries, lean on them. I hope you can find your way out of the mess. I'll be hoping that you do.
