I think you're overstating how rabid it actually is, although cancel culture definitely does exist.

But the other thing is that you have to balance that as a counterpoint to the rest of society, where there are no repercussions no matter what you do as long as you're wealthy enough, or famous enough, or sometimes just white enough. Even getting yelled at on Twitter usually isn't that much of a punishment. I don't think you can understand why parts of Twitter are so unforgiving without understanding that, and I really think that's the reason Twitter is like that in the first place.

That doesn't justify it in every case, and it's really bad when the logic is applied to people who aren't actually powerful. But it is what it is.

Yeah, the white gay kids, who don't remember when gay activity was literally illegal and never shown on TV except for jokes or karmic punishment, yelling at their favorite writers are personally attacking them by not making their ships canon are really suffering. They just can't help but scream at and threaten those subjecting them to such tyranny.
