I guess you've probably never liked a crossover pairing. Like Johnny Utah(Point Break)/Brian O'Conner (The Fast and the Furious (2001)) or Bruce Wayne/Tony Stark or Buffy Summers (Buffy: the Vampire Slayer)/Dean Winchester (Supernatural).

I don't know why you'd assume that. All the characters you mentioned may not be in the same canon, but they aren't unknowns. We know how they're portrayed in their respective canons, so imagining a crossover pairing isn't the same as having to make everything up from scratch.

Sorry, I read the secret wrong - that it was saying that you couldn't put together characters with an unknown dynamic.

How is that comparable? The secret talks about characters where you've only got a name, a vague description and maybe a pic or two, then people get cranky when the character isn't precisely what they imagined from these details. You're talking about fully realised characters being written in fic.
