I've pretty much given up on fanfic. Either people aren't writing for the fandoms/pairings I want or what there is that I'd be interested in is mediocre at best or awful at worst. I see all of the people in this thread saying that it is so easy to find good fanfic using tags and kudos and that hasn't been my experience at all.

On the other hand, I read a ton of original works. Either through the library or Kindle Unlimited, so they are "free". Sure there are some stinkers, but usually I can figure that out within a reasonable amount of time. (I sometimes get burned by a series starting out okay and getting progressively worse, so I've ended up reading 4-5 books and wish I had that time back, but that's not too common.) And with Kindle, Amazon is good about reccing similar authors and/or books. Plus I can search via keywords. I've read over a hundred books this year, and have enjoyed the vast majority of them.

Honestly, I just love when people read, whether it is fanfic or published fic. But I have seen the attitude about it being easier to find good fanfic, and that just hasn't been the case for a long time for me. So, I agree with you at least somewhat, OP.

Yeah, same. Even using filters and whatnot, there's just so much that's...not great, and trying to wade through the mud to find something worth my time is exhausting. I'd rather just take a chance on new content.

same. it depends a lot on the fandom you're looking for fic in, honestly. my main fandom's majority of fic is just really bad quality. and that may make me sound like a snob, but it is what it is. i'm not reading something with extensively poor grammar and characters so ooc they don't even resemble the canon ones anymore.

Gosh the OOC problem is sooo bad in a lot of fix I've read, especially when trying to find ship fic. It's like people don't know how to write romance outside of very thin personality parameters.

Yeah. I just tried again a couple of days ago, because I felt like fic. I used filters and looked at least somewhat at kudos, and I still was disappointed. I think I tried 15-20 fics, and I think I made it past the first chapter on one, maybe two. I'm actually kinda envious of people who find good fic so easily.
Edited (Fic, not fix. Darn autocorrect. ) 2018-12-16 04:41 (UTC)

I haven't quite given up on fanfic, but yeah. At this point I go by recs as much as fandom, and even then...

That and if I'm in the air about something, I've had better luck with checking the reviews for published stuff than fanfic hits/kudos/comments.

I think that might actually be part of the problem, and I hadn't realized it until your comment. I used to get recs on LJ. And now I don't have that source. So that is at least a little why I've been having more difficulty finding good things to read. Not just because of the fandoms/characters/ships I like.
