A kindle is a single purchase that could be saved up for or given as a gift, whereas multiple books are many purchases that can add up. I got my first kindle for about 20 bucks because Amazon sent me a coupon. Plenty of people could have a kindle but be limited in how many books they can afford to purchase for it. (And also as for the 'what for,' half my kindle is favorite fanfics. I've also got a couple fan-translated light novels on there that I converted with Calibre, which is free.)
