You can put pdf's & other documents on a Kindle to read. Also, free ebooks/epub files exist on the internet, even without taking piracy into account. There's also Kindle sharing, so your friends can "lend" you ebooks via Kindle. On top of that, a Kindle is a one-time purchase (& you can often get someone else to buy it for you as your one big birthday/holiday gift). Buying original fic is multiple purchases throughout the year, & if you are a prolific reader, that can quickly get expensive without library access.
