Every time I look for books, it's wading through shit creek. And yes, I look beyond the best seller shelf. Maybe you have lax standards or something, but I'm not finding what I want in fiction out of books--at least not in anything quality.

And wading through all the bad fanfic out there is...not like that? Because in my experience it's hard to weed out the bad fic even with the filters/tags/kudos talked about above. There's just SO much bad fic.

Maybe you have lax standards or something

There's no need for that.

I love fanfiction and write and read it all the time, but the fact is published books have several more layers of quality control before they reach a reader's eyeballs, and their writers often have more years of experience, so the average is a higher quality in general compared to fanfic writers who are mostly amateurs posting their work un-edited.

Sometimes I will find a fic I really enjoy, but it's not always for the quality - maybe it's a ship or a trope that I particularly like, for example - but if I really want to get my teeth into a satisfying story I'm more likely to turn to my bookshelf.
