[Great British Bake Off]

lol. 100% agreed, Paul is being ridiculous if he's saying it's because of the quality of the bakes. IMO it's because Paul probably has more creative control and more of a say now that the other 3 "original" judges / hosts are gone, so he can make more of a Big Deal of himself and the handshake and all.

Also, relatedly: nothing is as good as Noel making fun of him on the show for some pretentious drivel about how "the baking will decide" who wins, favorite moment of the most recent season.

I think the new GBBO was trying to focus more on Paul because he's the only member of the original GBBO judges/presenters left. Easily the least great part of the show IMO, but eh, I guess they didn't have any choice. This subject has come up before and other people have said they think it's to do with Paul being the "good" judge now because Prue is more of a hardass and I think there's some truth to that as well.

Mmm, totally. Plus I think the other three needed time to find their feet. I wonder whether it'll change at all now that Prue, Noel, and Sandi have more of an idea what they're doing on the show.

I think they're sort of settling in already... the first new season was rough, IMO. Prue's comments could be rather tactless at best and I think she's backed off that a little. Noel and Sandi still seem slightly awkward at times but I think that's the show's attempt to have them engage in whimsical banter a la Mel and Sue when they're not Mel and Sue.

I feel terrible for saying this, but I prefer Noel and Sandi to Mel and Sue. I know that what went down when they left wasn't good. But Mel and Sue just never worked for me and were the worst part of the show. Their humor just made me uncomfortable.

Prue is nowhere near as good as Mary, though. I miss Mary.

I love all four of them, but prefer Mel and Sue. They made a better duo in terms of comedy, IMO. I also liked that they had a lot more interaction with the bakers AND tasted the bakes and gave feedback on them, which Noel and Sandi don't do nearly as often.

I think the #1 thing that I still need to see from Noel and Sandi is them being as positive and enthusiastic and supportive as Mel & Sue often were. I think that's the biggest thing missing at this point - it was so important in the vibe of old GBBO.

This. Noel and Sandi aren't there yet.

LOL, I just was thinking about this the other day when I was watching an ep and he gave out, like, 3 handshakes in a row. I actually rolled my eyes at the last one and said out loud to my TV. "Those used to mean something."

(Anonymous) 2018-12-16 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That was such a disaster!

Ah ha ha, I love this secret, nonnie. It's so true. You could also use that "number of handshakes" graph as a proxy for "size of Paul's ego" as long as the baseline was starting at a high number already!

Hahaha, I love that there are actual charts for this!!!

Yeah, I agree with you though, OP.
