(Anonymous) 2008-08-30 03:58 am (UTC)(link)Exactly! Despite the obvious rarity of my OTP, I love it and I wouldn't trade it for any of the more mainstream pairings. And I have been very pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive feedback I've gotten on my fics featuring the pairing. But it can still be a little disheartening sometimes not having anyone to squee about it with, and knowing that, as you said, I would have a much bigger audience if I wrote for a popular pairing.
Just the other day, in fact, I came across a fic that was labeled as featuring two pairings: my OTP (character A/character B) and one of the more popular pairings in the fandom, character A/character C. I don't care for A/C at all, so I normally stay away from A/C fic, but since my OTP is so rare, I was curious about this one and just skimmed through it. It was told from B's point of view and essentially consisted of A rejecting B for C, which didn't surprise me since I knew the author was an A/C shipper. What was really depressing was when I looked at the comments. Not only were there a lot of them, but most of them were so long and detailed - these people were practically writing essays gushing about how much they loved the story. And all I could think was, "Man, if I started writing A/C, would I get feedback like this?" It kind of put me in a funk for a little while, haha.
Anyway, that was an incredibly tl;dr story, but all that to say that I empathize with the occasional frustration of shipping and writing a rare pairing.
