how is this a secret?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Which secret did you submit? I assume there must be at least one, and very high quality for you to feel so justified in criticizing other peoples' secrets.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
hi op

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Just another secret maker who doesn't like anon jerks whose only contribution to the thread is a whiny comment about whether or not something ought to be a secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
this is not phrased as a secret. it is an opinion. I don't know why Case let it slide. get over yourself please

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's fine. I could get over myself, but I'm not the one getting mad about a secret not meeting my personal guidelines for what constitutes a real secret for a community I don't mod.

So, which amazingly awesome real secret was yours again? You didn't say.

He does. In the Finnish episode. And Graham complains that he waited a long time for it in the finale.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It actually felt like a weird demand on Graham's part to me. I don't really know anyone who calls their step parents/grandparents by anything other that their first name unless they've been into their life since they were young kids, and Ryan was already a teenager.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
precisely this!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I mean, the way it came across to me was more like Graham would like it if Ryan called him grandad, but it also seemed a bit like a long standing joke that he didn't? So it didn't seem SUPER weird to me, but I get why it could.

And yeah, my Grandpa's second wife has been in my life for 23 years. I still call her by her first name. It just would feel weird to call her Grandma (and it's not out of loyalty to my mom's mom, I didn't like her that much).

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Did Graham actually demand it, though? I agree, it'd be a bit weird if he demanded it, but I don't recall it being that way.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
No. He never did.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
It was lovely when Ryan did call Graham 'Grandad', but not everyone has such a lovely relationship with their steps that they did.

My step mother resented me until she *died* because she asked me to call her 'Mum' when I was nine and I told her I already had a Mum and I called her Mum.

Let that sink in: She hated me for 20 years because I looked like my Mum and wanted to call my own - alive, healthy and 50% custody Mum - 'Mum'.

She fucked me up a lot.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a demand, though. You're making it out that Graham was overstepping boundaries and insisting on the title. He wasn't. That never happened.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he did and it was a nice moment. :)

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I don't understand why he SHOULD call Graham "granddad" and that it's unreasonable for anyone to try and force it on him. Graham was only married to Ryan's grandma for three years. Ryan surely grew up with, at least to some age, his granddad. Why SHOULD he leap to call this new guy his granddad when he barely knows him and he already knew a granddad?

Maybe it's because I'm someone's step-kid, but there's no purpose or reason in forcing a relationship on someone--especially not someone who is a freaking adult and can make their own decisions.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
But it can be a nice gesture, from the younger member of a blended family, to use the familial term.

Graham wasn't trying to force anything out of Ryan. But he was freshly grieving that day, and Ryan made the nice gesture.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we don't know that he had a biological granddad in the picture, he's never been mentioned. But in the show no-one seemed to be demanding it, and it was a nice moment in the end.

+1

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Not sure why so many people are jumping to the conclusion that Ryan was being forced or strongarmed into calling Graham Granddad. They obviously haven't seen the show.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because they couldn't visually find a way for Ryan to accept Graham in any way other than to call him his Grandad...
They wanted them to get along, but didn't want the drama for the both of them to meet Grace in the mirror world... So they settled with that.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody tried to force it on him, though.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-19 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I hope the moment was all you hoped for, OP! I did find it odd that Graham would want it so much, or seem to expect that it should happen eventually, but I love found family tropes so I found it satisfying. The related bits in the last episode were pretty damn good too.

spoilers??;;

I mean, I actually hate Ryan because of this... and by the time he finally calls him 'Grandad', is too little, too late...
It's one thing for a parent to change SO's when you're young, but for your Na'an to remarry when she's the closest family you have left- especially as an adult- is another matter entirely... I doubt they married after knowing each other for less than a week or so, and even then, it's long since been established that they love one another...
So Ryan knows Graham makes Grace happy. The fact he- especially after her death- continued to ridicule and disregard Graham is just pathetic. (in my opinion...)
The episode where Ryan finally calls him 'Grandad'- Ryan doesn't even get to meet the AU version of Grace. It takes away from the admission at that point, because Ryan still won't make the effort to console Graham that he doesn't blame him for their loss, let alone help him through it...

So, basically, calling someone your forefather, even after a traumatic event... does little to redeem Ryan. Even if he helps him through his loss, it is yet again, too little, too late...
