I think you hit the nail on the head, with the addition that a lot of socially awkward white men decided that their geek hobbies define them and what used to be denigrated was a source of pride. So confronting the fact that oh hey, women and minorities also enjoy geeky hobbies and always have feels like outsiders are STEALING THEIR PRECIOUS IDENTITIES. It's absurd, of course, but there you have it.

It's partly this, and also partly just... a lot of people are sexist/racist. It's really common no matter what group you're looking at.
