I'm 33 today, meaning I am finally an adult by hobbit standards. Woo.

Allow me to share my family's special birthday song:

The whole song is sung like a funeral dirge. In recent years we've added the following lyrics, thanks to the suggestion of someone on some forum or blog somewhere (could've been here):

Anyway, anyone else here have any weird birthday traditions?

No weird traditions. My dad and I always do a movie sometime during my birthday week. And I always have pie instead of cake.

It's not weird but someone once bought me a stuffed penguin for my birthday so after that my friends bought me all these stuffed penguins as gifts even though I wasn't all that interested in penguins that much when it all started. I ended up loving them though, because I had all these cute plush ones.

Happy birthday! That is a hilarious birthday song, I'd like for people to sing that to me now... No weird birthday traditions here, mostly because my family doesn't really celebrate it much. Not for religious reasons, it's just low key - we go out to dinner, and I usually end up making a special dessert depending on what the birthday person wants.

My mom's side has an extra jingle to the birthday song. I've always heard it sung by her and her family- so the first time I wasn't too shy to sing 'happy birthday' at my friends party, I naturally continued into it. I like vividly remember everyone just stopping to stare at me as I finished the song;; (I thought about stopping as soon as I realized nobody else was singing, but figured, aw fuck it- I might as well keep going;;)

I'll still sing it whenever I get the chance, a few of my friends even had me teach them the words;; I figured since they still invited me to their parties, the didn't mind waiting an extra minute to blow out the candles;;
