Say what you will about Trump, but we need to GTFO of the Middle East, and if he's not down with that, good riddance.

We need to get out of the Middle East once it stabilized a bit. But at least we can watch from afar as Turkey and Russia as genocide all the Kurdish people.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the US going into countries to make a mess of things and then suddenly decide "whoops, that's enough" and fuck off to leave everyone else to deal with the fallout of the mess they had a huge part creating in the first place.
It's like a toddler coming into a room, spending every single box of toys and Lego pieces, pushing everything together and leaving, expecting the adults to clean it all up.

As much as I think we need to get out of the Mideast as a general point of policy, this is really not the time or the way to do it.

It seems like there hasn't been a time or way to do it for going on 20 years. Which is unacceptable IMO.

We should never have gone there in the first place, and we should never vote for a goddamn Republican again, since all they bring is tax cuts and awful wars. And there are probably times where we could have gotten out better than right now, and a bunch of different things we could do to actually get us, constructively, to a point where we could leave that we haven't done.

But my principal concerns are that, one, there's not stability in Syria. Two, we're abandoning our allies, the Kurds. Those are my two issues, basically.

This. I'd be fine if we were out in terms of active combat. But we have a responsibility to at least continue to train their forces (which, IMHO, is a better strategy anyway) and to provide defense.

1. I agree we need to get out, but it needs to be a staggered withdrawal. Instant withdrawal is stupid.

2. We basically created ISIS, which means we have a responsibility to stop it. I think that should more mean us training Syrian and Iraqi troops than doing it ourselves. But whatever the case, just withdrawing is wrong.

ia we need to get out of the Middle East ASAP.

It's not the ideal time, or the ideal way. But the fact is, there will NEVER be an ideal time. The past 20 years have been a non-stop parade of bad times over there, in one area or another. And worse, every minute we stay is another minute shady govt people and businesses have a chance to influence things to keep us from leaving.

Give it six months to 'stabilize' things or take care of 'current problems', and it's going to turn into 20 more years of the same shit. And next year the problems that were supposedly solved will be as bad as ever. Because the US can't actually solve the real underlying problems in the first place.

There's really two big problems with US Middle East policy, and their names are Saudi Arabia and Israel. Which is a bit of a quandary, really, because the fact of the matter is that we're not going to abandon those commitment anytime soon, and so our options are constrained in terms of what we can do.

But I honestly don't think, given those constraints, that exiting immediately is our best option. And, I mean. If we can leave now, then we can leave later as well. I mean, right?

If we can leave now, then we can leave later as well. I mean, right?

In theory. In practice, things like this are determined by the whims of whoever is holding the strings at any given moment.

To use a somewhat made-up example.... President Fred makes some plans. Tax Bill 42, which hikes up taxes on corporations, starting in five years' time. And plans to pull out of the war in Kolechia, which will pull troops out in six month increments so we can 'fix things' and 'prepare the locals' and whatnot.

And then President Mark gets elected, and the senate gets bought out by corporations. Now Tax Bill 42 is getting the axe before it comes into effect (now that the public forgot about it). And maaaybe some troops have been pulled out of Kolechia, but they're really just getting shuffled around over to neighboring Obristan for a while. And then Kolechia destabilizes again, because OF COURSE IT DOES it's a fucking trainwreck all the time.

So now Kolechia is a mess and that sweet tax bill didn't come to fruition, and President Artyom runs on a platform of Fixing This Shit. And he introduces Tax Bill 43 (which starts in five years), and sends everyone back to Kolechia.

Remember when Bush Jr. promised to get out of Iraq? And then Obama ran TWICE saying he was going to get out of the middle east? And they were only the most recent in the string of presidents who said they were going to definitely leave the region, bc we've been over there for nearly 30 years.

Nothing good has come out of our occupation over there. Unless you count rampant terrorism, dictatorships, genocides, extreme income inequality, etc. as "good". A few more months isn't going to magically fix things.

I dunno where you think I'm generally in favor of Middle East adventurism, I'm certainly not, but being against Middle East adventurism doesn't necessarily entail getting rid of all troops immediately and forever.
