I read the manga back in the day, so I knew how it was gonna end, but it still made me cry (and pissed me off).

So did Ash die? I gave up with the anime two months ago, it was too boring.

Spoilers

Yep, he died. The manga also has an epilogue that makes it clear that he did and shows Eiji still grieving over losing him.

It's pretty implied he died, but not really confirmed either since it sort of ends without explaining. The manga had an epilogue that confirmed he died, but the anime doesn't have that, so there might be a little room for personal interpretation.

I have a theory that he's not dead. He's going to Japan to marry Eiji. That's my theory.

I don't wanna get my hopes up, but on the Banana Fish website, there's a character relationship chart and all the characters who are confirmed dead are greyed out, but Ash isn't. Maybe it's a simple mistake, but I'm really, really hoping that there's gonna be an OVA that shows he's still alive. Or maybe he's gonna end up greyed out if there's an OVA that confirms his death.

I honestly thought the ending was intentionally ambiguous until I read online that the manga confirmed his death. It seemed too weird that we'd have Eiji overhead narrating that he was sure they would meet again and that Ash can change his fate. Not to mention, it makes no sense for Ash to choose death after everything he's learned from Eiji... I get the manga goes the same way, but I wouldn't have known if I'd only seen the anime. Maybe there's a small chance we'll get an OVA that diverts from the manga that's about Ash pulling through?

I’m so glad it’s over. I’m tired of my flist moaning and weeping over an ending so many of them knew was coming. Why they watch such depressing shit is beyond me. I tried to watch with a friend because she always watches stuff with me and just could not... indifference soon turned to outright dislike and i’m Soooooo over this series.

I think i’m Just getting to an age where I need happy endings in my media. I can consume any of a dozen other canons just as heartbreaking as BF. Do not understand the desire to see more gay people die and never ever get to be happy.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-22 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding. I get for some people BF is cathartic and lets them work through similar trauma, but wow FUCK that ending. The ending is the worse use of dead gays I have ever seen and its actually really strange how fandom romanticizes it. There are more hopeful and nuanced queer shows that get way more flack for its flaws than Banana Fish did, which is so weird.

What sealed my love into hate for BF was when the author was like 'naw, Ash was never gay to begin with' and that right there was enough for me

She never said that, that was a mistranslation and misrepresentation of the interview. She's also joked that Ash is a "bottom" (in a gay relationship).

I thought the beginning was promising and it pretty much held up for S1, but it took a serious nosedive after that. I was indifferent to Ash and for all that Eiji was cute, his place in the story made so little sense that towards the end I was actively hoping he would die even though I knew he wouldn't.

I don't mind a protagonist dying in an action-drama series, gay or not, and I'm gay. I didn't like the ending anyway, I thought Ash deserved to be happy after everything he went through, but overall I think it was a really good series. I actually don't think it was all that depressing (beyond the last two minutes), it had some dark moments but also a lot of really fun parts.
