This is one of the most annoying things about contemporary media and Hollywood projects - the fact that casting so frequently favors beauty over talent. It's not a hard and fast rule or anything but with roles that aren't Meryl Streep-levels of demanding, Hollywood generally figures that if they cast someone pretty, the fact that their acting is kind of meh is something the audience won't notice. It pisses me off that they're mostly right.

Yeah, it's frustrating that there's not more variety. There's nothing wrong with a bit of eye candy but the total reliance on it, especially in genre / pulp stuff, is really egregious.

Provided one does not have an extremely narrow definition of beauty, a production can have it both ways if they wanted to bother.
