A conversation here on FS opened my eyes to why authors may not reply, so my attitude about that has changed somewhat. However, I still don't feel inclined to comment when they don't ever reply to "thoughtful" comments (like specific comments, not just "update plz"). Even with just a "thanks" or "glad you like it" or a blanket A/N thank you-- it doesn't have to be much. Just something that lets me know they actually receive and read the comments.
