Huh? Watching a TV doesn't make a person be "in a fandom." Participating in a fandom makes a person "in a fandom."

Also, why does a person have to be "super obsessive" to be in fandom? Is being a filthy casual really that bad?

Is this a troll secret? If so, it's working. 10/10.

People who follow a soap opera "religiously" know all the storylines, have theories about who did what and why, and probably have favorite ships as well. They may even discuss it with fellow fans of the soap opera. That certainly sounds like fandom to me.

BINGO!

Yes, your mom's in fandom. So is mine. Get over it.

This has to be one of the weirdest takes on what is or isn't a fandom that I've ever read.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I like the soap too (and I'm a grammar nitpicker).

technically sports is also fandom and the biggest fandom. have you seen how obsessive sports fans can be? they argue about who's team is better, spend thousands of dollars to watch their teams play and paint themselves team colors.

People like different things than you. What's there to get?

(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I would so throw that soap out the window. XD

Fandom
NOUN
1. [mass noun] The state or condition of being a fan of someone or something.
1.1 [count noun] The fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture.

Words can have many, many different meanings. Someone can be a fan of something, and still not be "in fandom" in some other sense of the word.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then you're just drawing arbitrary lines in the sand with your stuff at the center.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about which definition is at the center

It's about which definition is relevant for a specific context

It's really weird that the original genre media with shipping drama going back to radio is "not fandom" now.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-26 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I get you.

Since people who aren't into fantasy/scifi/anime/comics/superheroes often look down on fans of those things and at how those fans get obsessive and do cosplay and whatnot and insist their love of other things is totally different, it can be a bit jarring to realize they are wrong it's not different at all. It's like, if you're going to shit-talk the club, i don't want to acknowlege you as being in the club.

Two of my biggest fandoms - for which I and many other people wrote fic, drew art, edited vids, bought merchandise, etc. - were soaps (one daytime, one primetime).

Sorry, OP. I guess.
