Okay, yes, it is a common nickname. But in canon they use Nat. Why use something different in fanfic when canon already has a nickname that she actually likes?

ayrt

People can have more than one nickname that they answer to. I have five different ones just in my immediate family. Unless she's shown not to like it or answer to it, I don't see why it couldn't be a thing. We can assume a fair amount happens off-screen and I think this could plausibly happen.

How many times in canon has she been called Nat? Because I honestly have no idea and I've seen most of the movies she's in.

I disagree. I think it is weird to use a different nickname in your fic when one is already used in canon. We see what her friends call her, and that is Nat. Could there be someone else in her life who calls her something else? Sure. But to randomly stick nicknames in a fic where either none exists in canon and it is out of character to use one or another one is specifically used in canon is one of those tropes that just bugs me. Instant backbutton.
