The point of the Matrix was that you weren't given a choice. You lived in an artificial world where all the problems you were struggling with were manufactured on purpose. There is no way to fight poverty, rape, prejudice, and murder, because the machines are making sure that these things continue to exist. They addressed that in the first Matrix - the machines failed to create a perfect world, so instead of trying to understand what makes huamns happy, they decided for an option that makes humans unhappy, but is profitable for the machines.
