I don't think it's taboo, it's just not usually dramatically relevant.

Every time a character mails a letter, we don't necessarily see him driving out to the post office for stamps, you know?

But isn't this the beauty of fanfiction? That we can throw convention and dramatic relevance right out the window if we want to?

Sure! I guess my question is why you would want to. And I really want to be clear that I'm asking this in the most totally non-judgmental spirit possible - I'd ask the same question about the stamps example, I just don't personally really see what either one adds to the story. That doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just something I don't understand.

And the genre of the fic.

If it's a slice of life fic where everything is detailed like that it doesn't stand out from all the other SOL detail. If it's happening in the middle of a tense grimdark action fic ... why?
