Are you also baffled by scenes where characters eat or drink? That's mundane, too, I suppose and yet it does occur in many fics. If my characters do mundane things like eat or drink then at some point they'll likely also be sent off scene to use a toilet.

I do understand where you're coming from, though - not everyone likes slices of real life in their fantasy reading - I just happen to be someone who does like it.

DA

having characters meet up for lunch or have a drink or something, yeah

going into detail about how they mash food with their teeth or how things go down their throat and going into specific "body functions" about eating or drinking, nah - unless that's part of the plot (someone is starving, someone is drinking to forget, someone is having a drink because their throat is dry due to anxiety or fear, etc.), which is 1000% more likely to be relevant to characters than a random poop break*

*certain types of comedy exempted

If there's something going on in the scene and people happen to be having lunch, that's normal and natural. But you don't go into extensive detail EVERY time your character eats/drinks or goes to the bathroom. If your story spans more than a a day, that's just too much space dedicated to non essential details.
