My problem with all the slash and incest stories is that they take away from all the stories that *could* be written about the characters in a non-romantic way. I mean, I personally love to read/write about the platonic relationships between the characters. I have nothing *against* slash/incest, but I just wish that there was an equal balance between that(and heck, het too) and non-romantic relationships.

No, they don't. People who want to wrote platonic stories can still write them, slash does not "take" that away from them.

If there's not an equal balance, I don't see how that's the slashers fault. It's not up to us to help provide some sort of "balance", we're just writing what we want to read, and what other fans like us want. Maybe more people who want platonic stories should write them. And if they don't, blame them, not us.

No. No they don't. That's a fallacy.

If all the incest and slash fics mysteriously went away, not a single more gen or het fic will be written. Why? Because that's not what people want to write, and rather than writing what doesn't interest them, they simply don't write at all.

However, if you look, fics labeled "preslash" and "slash if you squint" are actually non-romantic relationships between two men. As for the het, it depends on the fandom. Some fandoms are almost entirely het. Some are half and half het and slash. Some are mostly slash. It largely depends on the number of interesting major women characters and the canon presence of a het ship.

A very valid point.

It's a pity that these sort of shipping wars have occured for as far as I can remember...and the same frustrations are still being vented, recycled verbatum from the days of old (e.g. Heero/Relena V.S anyone else?).

Ship wars annoy the crap out of me. I really hate the idea that in order for a fan to truly enjoy what naturally hits all her happy spots, she has to first make sure that no one else in the world ships the character differently. It makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

I too enjoy such work with the brothers. Even those which are bereft of hot-'n-heavy sexual moments, and instead based upon more honest-to-goodness brotherly adoration.

.....And I've been, and still am, an intense Ed/Al appreciator/artist for some years now.

Though I like both the 'incestual' works as well as the non-sexual ones; I don't blame anyone for lack of this or that. It's all about artistic preference of the creators~. ( What a great and perhaps dreadful thing, in this case. )

So, I can at least sympathize with your wish for equality in that respect.
However....
I still am of the mindset that you ought not spend so much time being distraught over the fact __ isn't being created, and wishing for it to be in places like this. It won't make things become fabricated faster.

With all the droves of people here whom agree, you could likely create a group, or locate one, which posts about Edward and Alphonse's purely innocent fraternal adoration. Make or discover it yourselves. Because, sadly, that's typically the only option when it comes to getting what a person wants.
