115 Sure, as long as they're able to pull it off, I've nothing against certain styles (I read Lovecraft with his original spellings, and other published fiction in present tense, different POV's, using different ways to denote dialogue et cetera). Usually it's just not done well enough in fanfic, though.

125: That's totally awesome.

158: So why are your reasons less superficial? (I mean, since you didn't mention what they are.)

Personally, I think people tend to dislike main characters for incredibly superficial reasons, up to and including just being the main character.

161: Really? I haven't started them yet (but I'm about to), so could you tell me why? I've got a friend who's talking about how she's like some slash about him, so I'm sort of curious.

169: Because the fandom consists of enough people that there are a fairly large group of shippers for any possible pairing? I mean, it's not like the fandom is a hive mind or anything. Just stay out of the Elricest corner and you'll be fine. I'm also one of those who love their close brotherly relationship and see no hint of romance/sex in it, and the mere existance of people with other opinions doesn't affect me, my enjoyment of fandom, or the canon. I just keep to my own interpretation!

Dunno about the OP's reasons, but here's my take: Harry is really, really straight. It's part of his self image (he can joke about being gay, but no chords strike deep in his heart) and the way he presents himself to the world. So any attempt to casually slash him without a lot of buildup comes across as OOC, and ignoring a fundamental part of his personality.

(That's Book!Harry, anyway. TV!Harry is a more ambiguous animal.)

Oh, yeah, and I slash Harry like a horror movie villain. But I can see the reasons other people wouldn't want to.

Really? What I've heard is that Harry keeps noticing how handsome certain other men are. Even while drowning...

I'm looking forward to reading them in any case, the world sounds fascinating.

Well, yes, he does often take breaks to notice how ripped his pals are, I mentioned elsewhere about him noticing a friend's bod when he'd just been dumped on.

But being straight is important to him, I get the sense. He doesn't just happen to be straight (as George Carlin would have put it), he's openly straight.

Yeah, sometimes these things seem more certain than usually, that's true. Still, to ficcers that tends to mean that you just need more buildup, haha.

Yes. Yes it does mean that to me. (I don't see him as in denial, say, although if he ever did have a bi impulse he sat on it pretty hard. But given the way he gets emotionally attached, situational homosexuality seems plausible.)
