"Whitewashing" is obviously not applicable and a dumb word to use.

But Green Lantern is a great example of how much of a mess superhero continuity / adaptations are, where there's at least 4 significant characters who get called "Green Lantern" and they all have actual fanbases. There are a lot of people for whom John Stewart *is* Green Lantern, just like there's a lot of people for whom Hal is. I can totally get where someone would be coming from saying that.

It goes to show how prevalent the cartoons' reach is (was?).

Hey, I would have been way happier with John Stewart. I grew up with him in Justice League and JLU.

Honestly he is the first one that comes to mind when I think of Green Lantern, even though I'm perfectly aware that he has been portrayed by white people before-- there is that moment of mildly offended distaste. I can't really help it. But I'm not about to go yelling at people over it, to be fair. I at least understand that it's totally on me.

They did still make a conscious decision to go with one version of Green Lantern and not another one.

At least we got to have John make the joke in TTG, "There was a Green Lantern movie, but we don't talk about that..."

I mean I didn't think the Ryan Reynolds movie was bad perse, just not great, but it was still a funny joke.

Tbh I would actually like to have a John Stewart GL movie, I liked him in JLU and what I've seen of him in the comics, and at this point if they do try for another GL movie I think picking someone other than Hal Jordan would be a good idea, so either John or why not an alien? That would be neat.

Yeah.

It was particularly weird because I remember there being specific discussions about which Green Lantern he would be playing (I also remember some people not being enthused by a Hal Jordan, rather than a Guy Gardener, or a Kyle Radner, even).

That's really sad. Now, there is some significance to the fact that they specifically chose Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern to portray. But whitewashing it is not.

I think most people complaining honestly just didn't know there had already been multiple characters who were the Green Lantern and Jon was the only one they were aware of. It's like how not everyone knows there have been multiple Robins (at least not more than the two on B:TAS). If you only went by the Justice League cartoon and didn't read comics, how would you know?

Anyway, wake me up when there's a GL movie with Alan Scott. Silly, giant collar REQUIRED.

I remember being entirely confused that Green Lantern was white when the movie was announced. I don't do comics and my longest association for GL was John Stewart, I barely recalled Hal Jordan at all. *shrug* He was on that superfriends cartoon right?
