Re: Confessions?

In a book series I read once, when the main character feels herself about to start freaking out, she has a mantra she says to herself (using her own name) in her mind. For some reason, I've picked up this mantra wholesale. My name isn't the same as hers, but it's what comes to my head when I'm trying to regain control of my thoughts, and substituting my own name just feels forced. The character is a serial killer, by the by, which makes me feel a little weirder about the whole thing, but there's no rule against identifying with some aspects of a bad person, especially when the book is (probably) all about humanizing them. (I say "probably" because despite the murder and all that, it's tween chick-lit. Which is why I'm too embarrassed to name the series.)

Reminds me of Dean Koontz’s Intensity, “Chyna Shepard, untouched and alive.” She was the victim of a serial killer essentially, but did the same thing to keep herself focused. I read that book once, years ago, and still think of the line sometimes.
