Yes. Five years ago my mother was vaguely homophobic and Republican. She is now a very active Democrat who went to her co-workers gay wedding last year.

That is awesome. Do you mind if I ask what changed her mind?

Well, it helped that she wasn't "super" homophobic. She was the kind of person who would say, 'I don't mind they are there, I just think marriage between is a man and a woman.' I think being friends with someone who was gay changed her mind.

As for the Republican thing, Trump. Full stop. She was what I would call a lazy Republican. She voted Republican but wasn't active in politics. She was disgusted when Trump won the primary and voted for Hillary. The response of Republicans since then has completely disillusioned her towards them. After the election, she changed her affiliation. She called our senate and house representatives at least once a week to express her disapproval. She has been to several protests and donates to democratic campaigns.

So yeah, Trump.

Ah, sounds more like casual homophobia, and very common. I'm glad that she drew the line at Trump.

Good for your mom, honestly. I mean, I get the whole "People don't deserve back-pats for not being awful" mentality. But in your mom's position, plenty of people would have (and did) dig in their heels and double down on their previously held political stance.
