I don't know, I'd like to think we're postmodern enough to acknowledge that borrowing and knitting together a bunch of distinct influences into a new whole can still be a real accomplishment, even if it's not "worldbuilding" in the popular meaning

It's less knitting than tossing whatever canned veggies you have in your pantry in a jello mold, sealing it in lime jello, and bringing it to the office potluck as a "salad."

If a fantasy writer's answer to a question is literally handwavium, that's bad fantasy writing and authors have been panned for similar. It's acceptable to say, "I don't know, I didn't research that."
