It's based on how in His Dark Materials, everyone has a daemon that takes an animal form that symbolically represents who that person is. If I recall right, daemons are meant to be the person's soul, manifested externally. There's more to it, but people like taking the daemon aspect and applying it to daemon aus for other series.

I'm pretty sure Pullman drops hints about kids and teens doing this - they go off and spend time alone with their daemons a lot.

I got the feeling from The Golden Compass that it was kind of a bigger deal than sexual intimacy? A daemon is like a physics manifestation of your soul, so someone putting their hands on it is a bit more taboo than grabbing a tit or something. Even married folks don't touch each other's daemons.

Wait, really? I haven't read the books, but in fanfic AUs, touching each other's daemons is used constantly as a shippy trope. I've never read a HDM AU that didn't involve the main ship eventually touching each other's daemons.

There is at least one significant moment in the books when two characters embrace and their daemons to likewise. I don't know where other anon got the idea that daemons should never touch.

I haven't read the books, but based on how daemons are presented in fusion fics, I totally agree.

It kinda squicks me out a bit, because well, in our world animals are animals and that's called bestiality. But I'm sure in the world of HDM people would think of daemons in a completely different way than they thought of animals.

I don't care if they're mystical beings with human-level sentience, they're in the forms of animals so it's still bestiality.

I've heard the same excuse from lolicons, "No no she's not a child, she's ACTUALLY 9,000 years old!"
