"as long as you don't do that thing where you use liking this character as an excuse to talk about how all the other characters actually suck and are terrible"

There's not even a tiny hint of that in the secret. OP even says they're going to keep their preference to themselves. Why do people think they have to lecture other people for potential fandom no-nos just because someone, somewhere else has maybe done this?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I was trying to picture a reason in my head OP might be worried about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Er... does OP sound worried?

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
They did to me. Maybe that was incorrect, but that's why I thought they'd "keep it to themselves".

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but I assumed they didn't want to harsh people's buzz about 13 and the diverse casting. And you don't have to tear other people's faves down to get flack about your own fave. This is fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
They did to me, too. :)

DA

I've seen this response before, and it just seems needlessly defensive to me. The AYRT isn't lecturing - they're just tossing out hypotheticals to broaden the conversation, and to acknowledge that the issue has some complexity to it.

It's their way of making conversation, and giving the person they're talking to a considered reply.

Disagree. Imagine how tiresome it'd be if every innocuous thing you said was met with a remark that assumed you might do something shitty unless someone qualifies that it's not okay.

"I'm going out to the store to grab some milk!"
"Okay, just as long as you don't block the aisle with your cart and get in the 12 items and under line when you have 30 items!"

"I'm thinking about ordering pizza for dinner."
"That's cool, as long as you don't yell at the delivery guy and then stiff him on the tip."

"It's taco Tuesday at my grandma's house and I'm really psyched."
"That's fine, as long as you don't say racist stuff about Mexicans."

Imagine how tiresome it'd be if every innocuous thing you said was met with a remark that assumed you might do something shitty unless someone qualifies that it's not okay.

But this is not some innocuous thing. This is a fandom secret. The person made it and sent it in because 1. They don't feel they can share it openly, and 2. They want people to discuss it.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. The whole point of Fandom Secrets is discussion.

(Anonymous) 2019-01-09 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Those are cogent points. But I for one am not particularly convinced that this is discussion. It's just telling someone "Okay, as long as you don't do [this crappy thing you never mentioned even wanting to do]!"

It's not opening up a conversation about what situations are and aren't okay, it's just interjecting this weird qualifier that may not even apply to the OP's situation at all, yet people are bringing it up anyway. I mean look:

"I'm thinking about ordering pizza for dinner."
"That's cool, as long as you don't yell at the delivery guy and then stiff him on the tip."

That's not a discussion about the tipping system in the U.S., customer service, what constitutes a fair minimum wage, or employment practices that allow employers to pay well below minimum wage with the expectations that their workers should be able to make up the remaining amount in tips. It's not a discussion at all. Like the original comment, it frames it as a personal admonition - as long as YOU don't do this bad thing. It takes an innocuous statement about ordering pizza (which contains no threat or being a bad customer) and puts it on the table as though the statement IS about being a bad customer.

That's what I find weird and slightly self righteous about the whole thing.
